a Portfolio That Sells Your Expertise Without Saying a Word

Introduction

The strongest portfolios make their case before a visitor reads a caption. The selection, the sequence and the craft of the presentation carry the argument; the words confirm it.

Selection is the argument

Which six projects you show says more about your judgement than any about page. A coherent six reads as a studio with a point of view; a varied twelve reads as a studio that takes whatever comes.

Sequence carries the story

  • Open with the project closest to the work you want next.
  • Follow it with your most technically demanding piece.
  • Close with something that shows range, not something weaker.

Craft the presentation as carefully as the work

A brilliant identity photographed badly reads as a mediocre identity. The mockups, the crops and the order are part of the deliverable, and a visitor cannot separate them from the work itself.

Expertise is demonstrated by what you left out, and everyone can tell.

Conclusion

If your portfolio needs a paragraph to explain why a project belongs in it, the project does not belong in it.

Show less, show it better, and let the selection do the arguing.
